LTE and IMS – A Match Made in Heaven

It’s funny how things go sometimes. Just yesterday I’ve crowned my day as the day of LTE – not because of any special reason, but simply because I bumped into too many LTE related posts in the blogosphere. Here are the interesting ones: It all started in the morning, when Andy Abramson coined LTE as Long Term Excuses. It brought me to Dean Bubley’s blog – a new blog I now added to my reading list. There (read more...)

Carnival of The Mobilists #220: Israeli Independence Day

I don’t have much luck with Carnival of the Mobilists hosting. Whenever I volunteer for the task, there’s s national holiday, and I end up writing it while on vacation. So no wonder that this time it’s right up the alley of Independence day here in Israel. And what’s better to open an independence party with than the open of them all – Apple. Apple Carl Martin from Mobsessed does a good analysis (read more...)

7 Things I Hate About Google Nexus One (and Any Other Smartphone For That Matter)

I’ve been doodling around with a shiny new Google Nexus One in the past couple of weeks – an “upgrade” from my corporate Nokia N85, which was a BIG “upgrade” from my old Nokia 6210, which was an “upgrade” from another Nokia phone. I’ve placed “upgrade” for a good reason here on the list – it’s simply because with each new phone came a better “experience”, but with a huge compromise. And the Nexus One is me saying that I’m (read more...)

What Interfaces Should I Add to my HD Videophone?

[This post is part of our Designing Hardware for HD series. Be sure to check it out!] It’s about time we deal with interfaces. Not the video ins and outs – I have already touched on that one. This time I want to discuss the interfaces that usually connect to a videophone product – and trust me, there are a bunch of options here. Yes, I’m talking peripherals here – those pesky things your end-users will end up connecting to (read more...)

Chrome OS’s End Game: Browser Communications

Google announced a few weeks ago their shiny new Chrome OS. It’s the old-new approach to computing: having a dumb terminal connected to external computing services. The problem is, that it is only half baked, and a few years ahead of its time. Chrome OS in a Nutshell To me, Chrome OS is simply an operating system that has a browser as its user interface. While people in the blogosphere mainly focus on the boot speed of it (7 seconds), (read more...)

Where Servers Consolidate, Clients Diversify

In case you haven’t noticed the latest trend, our clients/terminals/endpoints are becoming diversified in almost every aspect, while our servers are being consolidated. I’ve written here more than once about the way that chips and platforms for consumer electronic devices and video conferencing terminals are going towards multiple cores, but where each core has different capabilities: you have a host processor, and a bunch of accelerators for video processing and graphics, encryption, baseband functionality for cellular and wireless, etc. We’re (read more...)

How Will Operators Kill Them Mobile VoIP Startups? One Voice

There’s been a lot of talk lately about mobile VoIP. People feel like the mobile operators are about to lose their businesses to all those startups offering free and low cost calling by utilizing the data path of cellular networks. I have provided my views already on why I think these startups are not growing anywhere, and why IMS will wipe them out of the market altogether. Guess what? I’ve been prophetic in this one. This week, a distinguished group (read more...)

How the iPhone Changed the Game… EVERY Game

The iPhone has been around for a while now. And while it has been a game changer to the mobile handset industry, it was also a game changer of almost EVERY other industry in town. I came to this conclusion reading Om Malik’s post about the wireless bandwidth boom, which has (of course) been driven by the iPhone: But the popularity of new 3G devices such as the iPhone and BlackBerry 3G has increased the use of data, putting the (read more...)
