Why Video Calling isn’t a Web Browser Feature?

Ever asked yourself when will video calling or even voice calling become something prevalent over the internet? I am afraid that the answer is “not so soon”. For this to happen, there are two distinct technologies that come to play: HTML5 (which is still in its early days) and Flash (which is installed on most web browsers worldwide). HTML5 It seems like the two missing pieces to get video calling going in a browser is having the ability to receive (read more...)

Ideas Worth Spreading About Streaming a Live Event

Yesterday was a joyous day here in Israel. TED came here to our small province in the embodiment of TEDxTelAviv. If there’s anything to say about this event right now is that while Sagee (my colleague from Video Over Enterprise) was there in the flesh, I WASN’T INVITED! So you should definitely expect a rant post. With such a predicament, I had to tap into this event over the internet in a streaming session set up by the TEDxTelAviv gods. (read more...)

Network Error Protection Magic Quadrant for Video Coding

Video over the IP usage is growing these days – it ranges from watching video clips (streaming), to uploading video content (to UGC websites) and to video calling. All this is done mostly over the Internet, which is a “best effort” network. The 2 Kinds of Real Time Video

People often use the term “real-time video”, but it could me different things to different people. Some regard real-time video as the kind you stream, others as the kind you use for visual communication. The difference may seem insignificant, but it’s all that is needed to botch a real- time video project. The Kind You Stream The streaming kind is uni-directional – the video in this case flows from a single source to one or more destinations. As the delay (read more...)

Will RTSP be Replaced by SIP for Streaming?

RTSP is a must for IPTV today. It is what makes VOD (Video on Demand) work. As a protocol, RTSP is quite simple: you open an HTTP connection and send messages over it that are similar to the physical remote control for video (play, pause, etc.). But will it do? Does IPTV really sum up to a smart web VCR? I already described my future TV, which requires more than that. Can SIP, our Swiss Army Knife, take the (read more...)
