Time For Visual Communications With SIP

Two weeks ago, the IMTC has publicly announced its progress in the work of defining SIP video. People here may ask why SIP Video needs any defining work. After all, SIP had the ability to deal with video channels for ages. And the answer is that while it may have that ability, it doesn’t really interoperate with that well. RADVISION has taken part in the work done at this IMTC activity group, and I’ve been silently monitoring it from (read more...)

What If Microsoft Developed Twitter

[Once in a while there comes a time to write a post unrelated to VoIP. Or anything else in this blog for that matter. The sole purpose of the post is to attract readers that might find it amusing enough to stay around a bit - or god forbid subscribe to the blog in question. Guess what? You are now reading such a post.] - What if Microsoft was the company behind the service we all call Twitter? Every tweet (read more...)

Why VoIP Security is More Important Than we Thought

A month ago I gave a list of different “features” that might be stacked up in what we call VoIP security. It turns out that just a day earlier, BusinessWeek reported about a new study of net vulnerabilities. I’d like to go over some of the key findings in this report from a VoIP perspective. That’s how you do it! Applications and not operating systems are the risk It seems like operating systems are being targeted less and (read more...)

Where Would You Draw The Line On VoIP Privacy?

The Onion hit a nerve a few weeks ago, touting that Google’s privacy opt out option requires moving to a desolate village: Funny as it is, it does raise a question: what would you consider as “privacy”. I’d like to focus a bit more on my own area of interest – VoIP, and fine tune the question a bit: What Would You Consider as VoIP Privacy? Privacy isn’t easy to achieve. I’ve already discussed the various pitfalls in (read more...)

Going Federal with VoIP: Read All About It

This is just a quick note: a few days ago, we published the August issue of our Realize VoIP newsletter. This time, it’s focused on the use of VoIP in emergency and first response communication networks. I’d like to focus your attention to 3 specific parts of this newsletter, which I believe might be useful for you: 1. Seminars We’re now providing face-to-face seminars to companies who wish to know more about VoIP and it’s implementations in various federal communication (read more...)

VoIP from around the net: August 24, 2009

Andreas Constantinou from VisionMobile sheds some light on governance models of open source projects – as he phrases it, open is the new closed. R Reddy writes on GIPS blog about future threats of VoIP security – while I agree, I believe the threat will be way larger than that we faces (and are facing) on PTSN networks. While I do tend to deal with Presence in its technological sense here, Sagee did bring to my (read more...)

VoIP Security is More Than Just Hollow Threats

VoIP Security has long been viewed as another one of those features that no one really needs, but must be in the feature list to win bids. It is also something that companies who have it tout as mandatory and scare the hell out of prospective customers. I hate both ends of this equation, but I do feel that there is something to consider here. R Reddy over at the GIPS blog believes that security threats are real in (read more...)

7 Reasons for Integrating IPTV with IMS

The lines between communication services are getting blurrier every day thanks to the internet. Some of us do phone calls (or video calls) over Skype or through other VoIP providers and those of us who don’t still dial transatlantic calls might not know it but we actually go over IP some of the way in-between these continents. The same is happening for television, which eventually transitions to IP service. As we move to a world where service providers offer triple-play (read more...)

4 biggest VoIP security threats

Security is always overlooked when it comes to VoIP. There are those who feel that security is essential and others who think security is overrated. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. If we need security, we need to decide against what. Here are 4 of the biggest threats in the world of VoIP where it comes to security – this is why we really need to take a good hard look at how we deploy our networks. 1. SPIT (Spamming) (read more...)

Are we letting our guard down?

[The IP based services such as VoIP (with or without IMS) run over open IP networks. As such, they are susceptible to security threats similar to those in the Internet. As VoIP communications becomes widely used, the security level on it becomes essential. In this guest post, Rasa Siegberg a Senior Systems Engineer from SafeNet provides his insights to VoIP and security.] The Great IP Migration The venerable voice communications industry is undergoing one of the most significant evolutionary steps (read more...)
