Assessing and Improving Quality of Experience – the Webinar

Our latest webinar on TMCnet was called Voice and Video over IP Communications: Assessing and Improving User Experience. As we already know that video calling is happening and we know how it fits into the UC world, we decided to discuss on this webinar the different issues related to the quality of video calling. The focus was around video, although we did deal with audio as well. For video, there are two main approaches for assessing and improving the quality (read more...)

Apple FaceTime for the iPhone (or: Why I Should Now Eat My Hat)

The new iPhone 4 was just announced. It’s not 4G or HD – just 4. I have to give it to Steve this time – not calling it 4G means he isn’t jumping the LTE wagon just yet. And not calling it HD means he really knows what HD is, and while the display of the new iPhone is impressive, HD it ain’t. The worst part of it all? It has a front facing camera. And as someone who predicted (read more...)

Interoperability Testing – Not What You Thought It Should Be

[This post is part of our Designing Hardware for HD series. Be sure to check it out!] You’ve got to love Twitter. When I started this series of posts, I got a request from @ucexpo to discuss interoperability: While I don’t see interoperability testing (IOT) as a hardware issue, I will try to share some insights on how we design the IOT for our BEEHD product. BEEHD is a software solution we offer. It is designed to help developers (read more...)

Time For Visual Communications With SIP

Two weeks ago, the IMTC has publicly announced its progress in the work of defining SIP video. People here may ask why SIP Video needs any defining work. After all, SIP had the ability to deal with video channels for ages. And the answer is that while it may have that ability, it doesn’t really interoperate with that well. RADVISION has taken part in the work done at this IMTC activity group, and I’ve been silently monitoring it from (read more...)

Forward Error Correction Done Right

There’s a trend these days to employ Forward Error Correction (FEC) as a means to improve media quality in voice and video calls. It is also something that RADVISION has been actively pushing at the ITU-T – and will probably be added in one of the next ITU-T meetings as H.323 Annex I. When we started working on our SVC solution, and had to decide where to place the error correction data, we debated on a very basic question: (read more...)

WiFi VoIP Instead of 3G Calling? Give Me Seamless WiFi First

I am definitely not a gadget freak – the mobile phone I use is the corporate Nokia 6120 classic and I am happy with it (!!!), but I am a workaholic – so, at home, my laptop is always open, the VPN is always connected, and I check my corporate email account frequently. Why am I telling you that about myself? Because some people think WiFi VoIP is going to replace 3G calling. Michael Graves, for instance, thinks DECT is (read more...)

The SVC Information Pack

You’d think that when my pal Sagee finally got two whitepapers on SVC that he worked on for quite some time published, he would run and tell his friends about it (or at least mention it on his blog). Well, he didn’t – the only thing he did was let his twitter followers know. I, however, decided I should let my readers know about these whitepapers as both are a good read. “The SVC Whitepaper” The first whitepaper to read (read more...)

5 Reasons Why Mobile VoIP = #FAIL

Last month I’ve mused about Mobile VoIP, first suggesting IMS will kill it and then stating it is not going to happen any time soon. I think it’s time I stand behind my big words and explain why. Here are my 5 cents reasons: 1. Mobile VoIP is (Still) Downloadable Mobile VoIP is yet to be embedded as part of the natural user experience of a mobile phone. There are some handsets that support mobile VoIP, but finding it, configuring (read more...)

Network Error Protection Magic Quadrant for Video Coding

Video over the IP usage is growing these days – it ranges from watching video clips (streaming), to uploading video content (to UGC websites) and to video calling. All this is done mostly over the Internet, which is a “best effort” network. This means that there is no guarantee that that which is sent will be received in real time, this of course includes video. This means that any video being sent over the Internet has to be protected for (read more...)

What Makes our BEEHD Video Codec Different?

[We've just announced our Samsung-RADVISION VC240 HD videoconferencing LCD monitor and our BEEHD videophone engine. What we've noticed is that customers tend to ask a lot about our video codec in these products. Amit Klir, our "resident media specialist" for BEEHD explains what makes the video codec in our client product so great] As when giving a gift, customizing it makes the gift so much more effective: the same hold true with video codecs. When looking for one, you need (read more...)
