LTE and the Future of IMS – A Post Webinar Post

My dear friend, colleague and office ‘roommate’ Sagi Subocki is our Product Manager for everything SIP and IMS for developers. Last week, Anatoli Levine and Sagi hosted a webinar about LTE and the future of IMS. There was lots of interest in this webinar, with a high registration and participation rate. I guess the topic of LTE coupled with IMS is something that is getting high demand, and it makes sense – especially when you look at the VoLTE initiative (read more...)

LTE and IMS – A Match Made in Heaven

It’s funny how things go sometimes. Just yesterday I’ve crowned my day as the day of LTE – not because of any special reason, but simply because I bumped into too many LTE related posts in the blogosphere. Here are the interesting ones: It all started in the morning, when Andy Abramson coined LTE as Long Term Excuses. It brought me to Dean Bubley’s blog – a new blog I now added to my reading list. There (read more...)

Standardization, Interoperability and Unified Communications

What do you know? RADVISION has just become one of the first members of a new international organization, the Unified Communications Interoperability Forum (UCIF). Other members include Aspect, AudioCodes, ClearOne, HP, Jabra, Juniper Networks, Logitech/LifeSize Communications, Microsoft, Plantronics, Polycom, and Teliris. UCIF is definitely not the first such organization that RADVISION has joined. Other such organizations come to mind are IMTC, IMS Forum and SIP Forum. These are all organizations dedicated to interoperability of VoIP related standards and in (read more...)

What Makes “A Standards Expert” an Expert?

In the past I took the opportunity to be part of RAVISION’s standardization efforts- especially those revolving around 3G-324M and fast call setup time. Ah, the good old days. I was doing that with the assistance of several of our standards experts. The best of them are kickass engineers – ones I had some hard time catching up with. An ITU-T meeting from a few years ago (I am the red shirt on the first row) So what makes (read more...)

MediaTek and Our 3G-324M

It’s not every day that an opportunity falls in my laps not only to talk about something dear to me, but also to have a press release accompany it. And when opportunity knocks, who am I to say no. If you haven’t noticed, we’ve published a press release about MediaTek selecting our 3G-324M stack for their system-on-chip solutions for handset vendors. I thought I would share with you a short story of what went on behind the scenes… A (read more...)

How Will Operators Kill Them Mobile VoIP Startups? One Voice

There’s been a lot of talk lately about mobile VoIP. People feel like the mobile operators are about to lose their businesses to all those startups offering free and low cost calling by utilizing the data path of cellular networks. I have provided my views already on why I think these startups are not growing anywhere, and why IMS will wipe them out of the market altogether. Guess what? I’ve been prophetic in this one. This week, a distinguished group (read more...)

5 Reasons Why Mobile VoIP = #FAIL

Last month I’ve mused about Mobile VoIP, first suggesting IMS will kill it and then stating it is not going to happen any time soon. I think it’s time I stand behind my big words and explain why. Here are my 5 cents reasons: 1. Mobile VoIP is (Still) Downloadable Mobile VoIP is yet to be embedded as part of the natural user experience of a mobile phone. There are some handsets that support mobile VoIP, but finding it, configuring (read more...)

Mobile VoIP is Still Far Ahead

Mobile VoIP is probably going to be trumped down by IMS. It’s only a matter of time. When carriers will see VoIP as a real opportunity, they will embrace it, and that embrace will be in the form of IMS. While that is true, I believe we’re still a few years before mobile VoIP will be interesting enough for carriers. But don’t take my word on it – ask a better: Martin Sauter. In a recent post of his, Martin (read more...)

Going Federal with VoIP: Read All About It

This is just a quick note: a few days ago, we published the August issue of our Realize VoIP newsletter. This time, it’s focused on the use of VoIP in emergency and first response communication networks. I’d like to focus your attention to 3 specific parts of this newsletter, which I believe might be useful for you: 1. Seminars We’re now providing face-to-face seminars to companies who wish to know more about VoIP and it’s implementations in various federal communication (read more...)

Mobile VoIP Movement Might Become Irrelevant Due to IMS

VoIP blogs have been filled with optimism lately about the prospects of mobile VoIP. Om Malik reports about this: But two recent statements by carriers from different parts of the world are making me wonder if the mobile phone companies are softening their stance on mobile VoIP. Last week, Verizon went out of its way to highlight the fact that it had tested VoIP calling on its new 4G wireless network. (The other 4G wireless company, Clearwire, has warmed up (read more...)
