[This post is taking part in our Designing Hardware for HD series. Be sure to check it out!] In my last post, I discussed the different layouts that are required by a video endpoint, focusing mainly on the basics – single video source, single display. This leaves a lot to be desired, both on consumer videophones and on enterprise video phones. I’d like to address this post what happens when you want to go to the enterprise market with a

The iPhone has been around for a while now. And while it has been a game changer to the mobile handset industry, it was also a game changer of almost EVERY other industry in town. I came to this conclusion reading Om Malik’s post about the wireless bandwidth boom, which has (of course) been driven by the iPhone: But the popularity of new 3G devices such as the iPhone and BlackBerry 3G has increased the use of data, putting the

The Onion hit a nerve a few weeks ago, touting that Google’s privacy opt out option requires moving to a desolate village: Funny as it is, it does raise a question: what would you consider as “privacy”. I’d like to focus a bit more on my own area of interest – VoIP, and fine tune the question a bit: What Would You Consider as VoIP Privacy? Privacy isn’t easy to achieve. I’ve already discussed the various pitfalls in

[Anatoli Levine, our Director of Product Management in the US for the Technology Business Unit, is headed to ITEXPO. He wanted to share with you his expectations of things to come .] I want to talk about expectations. You got that right. Arguably, it is the moments in life when you expect something to happen, are the best things that come out of it. Not when you already got what you wanted (or not), but the expectation of something [good,

I think we’re coming to an end to the “resolution wars” in visual communications. While Sagee might state that in our business there is “no such thing as enough…”, when it comes to resolution and frame rate, I’d say that we’re done for now- time to move on and focus on other issues. A brief review of the recent history of video telephony Once upon a time, we (as an industry) had video conferencing. It was based on the (in)famous

[The world is moving to video, so if you're dealing with VoIP communications and video is on your radar, there are some terms you probably need to know. I have asked Amit Klir, who is one of our video experts to compile a short list of the most essential terms in video coding.] As video over IP is becoming commonplace, more and more people are becoming involved with video applications development, integration, deployment and administration. As complicated as video

Although it is not IPTV Month any longer, there’s one thing that slipped my RSS reader (or rather, was marked for IPTV Month but I never got to it). And that’s the link between a mobile handsets and IPTV. A lot was said and done about mobile TV, and how the Olympic Games were a win for online and mobile content. But the bottom line? People want to see their mobile phone as a simple (and smart) remote control for their set-top boxes. Check out the following question on linked-in: If you could have one service or feature that tied your mobile phone to your livingroom what would it be? It got 16 answers. What do people ask for? Connecting their mobile phone to the PVR so they can record their favorite shows. I’d go a step further and say that full remote control over my home entertainment system would be great – this way, I can use the phone as a remote control for the whole thingamajig that sits in my living room while at home, and program remotely the PVR. It would be nice to have the EPG available directly on my mobile phone as well. And while I’m at it, why not get that iPhone second as a Wii controller?
