WANTED: Multi-core for video communication clients

Danny Loeb provided his insights on the effect of multicore on SIP servers, but what about video communication clients? Up until today, there is a tendency to either push multi-core hardware as the next best thing (mainly by the relevant chipset vendors) or to dismiss it for most uses. While that has been true up until today, it’s popularity is changing - the latest evidence being Skype version 4.0 beta release, which is video-centric. There is a multitude of other (read more...)

Mobile IM next year? Get real

Crunch Gear had an interesting post - somehow, they are expecting mobile IM to go mainstream next year. Somehow, this seems a bit farfetched. Mobile IM will take at least 2-3 years or more to become popular. IM vs SMS IM is usually seen as an SMS competitor. Taking this viewpoint, there is only a single reason why IM will become popular, which is also the reason it won’t. The reason is cost. People are used to paying high prices (read more...)

Video conferencing on an iPhone? In what protocol?

It has been rumored that the new 3G iPhone features a front facing camera. Assuming this is true, the camera will be used for video calling. An important question is what protocol will be used for the video calls? I have written a guest post at Smith on VoIP blog regarding the difference between 3G-324M and SIP regarding mobile video telephony. In that post I explained that currently mobile video telephony (on handsets) is made possible using 3G-324M. SIP, on (read more...)

Off to our annual roadshow in Asia Pacific

Once a year, RADVISION’s TBU division holds a road-show in Asia Pacific. In these events, we travel between different countries, meeting clients and holding seminars. Our road-show for 2008 starts today. Seminar in Taipei during the 2007 road-show Now, that the IMTC SuperOp 2008 event is over, it is time to look forward on what will happen in the next two weeks. The road-show is a very exhausting event - it spans four different countries, usually in less than two weeks. In each country, besides the frantic runs from one meeting to another there is a seminar. During the seminar we present the various market needs of the industry along with our solutions - all this is “seasoned” with live demonstrations. This year’s theme is “Development for innovative multimedia application for IMS/NGN”, in which we cover market trends, relevant protocol stacks, client and server frameworks and testing tools. The seminar is relevant for companies who are developing VoIP communication products. In the next two weeks, we will be traveling around Asia, with countries such as Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan on our tour this time. If you are around, you are hereby invited. Just drop me a message.

The missing link in VoIP clients for Linux mobile platforms

VoIP clients on mobile handsets are just starting to happen. At the same time, Linux is becoming an interesting mobile platform. The problem is, Linux is quite fragmented: Android, LiMo, Qtopia are just a few of the many flavors of the popular freely available open source OS. This is not just a fragmentation of distributions, which is the case today for the desktop and enterprise Linux markets, but rather a fragmentation of user interface (UI) frameworks. The mobile UI (read more...)

Endpoint vendors beware! LCD manufacturers are breathing down your necks!

There is a growing trend that is placing video conferencing endpoint vendors on a collision course with LCD makers: In recent years, endpoint vendors have started to provide high-end video conferencing clients built into LCD monitors to executives. As technology becomes cheaper, they will start providing these monitors to all employees - not only to executives. On the other end, the LCD vendors are facing fierce competition with ever-shrinking margins. This competition has forced these vendors to search after added (read more...)

IMS Client for the masses

Developing a videophone or any other telecommunication client? You should start thinking seriously about IMS. Today, there are two main standards used for multimedia communications over IP: SIP and H.323, where SIP is the standard which is being adopted by most vendors today - especially in the consumer market. As 3GPP, 3GPP2, TISPAN, Packet Cable and WiMAX have all selected IMS for their next generation networks, it goes without saying that a lot of vendors will start working on IMS (read more...)

The 2 Emerging Markets of Video Communications

Video as a means of communication between people has been with us for over a decade, but it hadn’t made it mainstream yet. It seems like there is evidence of that changing.Technology wise, we are almost there: We now have the processing power, bandwidth and knowledge of how to build a video system enabling people to interact in real-time and provide good quality of experience. Only problem is, video telephony is not taking off as much as it should, but (read more...)

Downloadable mobile clients – fact or fiction?

We all had that joyful moment of downloading another application from the web. Some of us (well, probably a lot of us) are using Skype - a downloadable client for desktops. But what about mobile handsets? Can we have a downloadable client that truly works on a handset? In the past year, I’ve answered RFIs and RFQs of operators and handset vendors who were seeking to develop a VoIP client. The customers asked for a client that should support (read more...)
