Video? There’s an App for That

It seems like everyone these days has an application. So it was only a matter of time until one of the video conferencing vendors out there would come out with an application of its own. Well, it’s our pleasure to be the vendor with this news – video conferencing? There’s an app for that! Yes, we’ve just released our SCOPIA Mobile app – an iPhone/Blackberry application that can essentially control our SCOPIA line of products. As someone who has (read more...)

The Final (Social Networking) Frontier: The Mobile Address Book

[Antoine RJ Wright is a smart person I have never met, but one who I met through this blog. I've ended up reading his writings and also his comments on this blog once in a while. In my search for a Skype killer post, Antoine left an interesting idea that I just had to have clarified a bit. I ended up asking Antoine to write a guest post on his idea of the open address book, which he did. I (read more...)

How the iPhone Changed the Game… EVERY Game

The iPhone has been around for a while now. And while it has been a game changer to the mobile handset industry, it was also a game changer of almost EVERY other industry in town. I came to this conclusion reading Om Malik’s post about the wireless bandwidth boom, which has (of course) been driven by the iPhone: But the popularity of new 3G devices such as the iPhone and BlackBerry 3G has increased the use of data, putting the (read more...)

PCs to Replace Desktop Phones? Not in This Lifetime

A lifetime may seem too long, but I can sure vouch for 10 years. At least 10 years. Earlier this month, Irwin Lazar reported at Enterprise 2.0 about Microsoft’s arguments that desktop phones are dead: At VoiceCon this week Microsoft’s Gurdeep Singh Paul argued that the desktop phone is dead, and that organizations who fail to make the switch to PC (or application) based telephony will fall behind those that do. Irwin also states that he believes otherwise: Our research (read more...)

What is Your Smartphone’s Focus?

In the race for the perfect (best?) mobile phone, we have forgotten what a phone really is. We started out by having a large, clunky mobile handset, and focused on downsizing it until we reached the point of absurdity. The big challenge seemed to be maintaining the basic phone features, like voice calling and texting (SMS). Then, PDAs started popping out, and the debate shifted from “who has the smallest phone” to “who will win the day: phones or PDAs”. (read more...)

iPhone vs Android, Windows Mobile vs RIM – are these the correct battlefields?

2008 was a great year for smartphones. It was so great, that some believe it will wither the recession with little more than a hitch. It all began, of course, with Apple releasing the iPhone. From then on the industry went into frenzy, trying to catch up with the three game changing concepts the iPhone has brought with it: Touch screen technology rocks User interface is everything App stores are where you sell software Since (read more...)

Desk Phone Killer Out? Not On My Desk.

RIM came out with an announcement that Blackberries can replace desk phones for enterprise users. A (blackberry) bold statement, and one I do not share. Eric Krapf, over at NoJitter, thinks this is the closest thing to a desktop phone killer ever. While that is true, with no other alternative out there, I think it’s a bit premature to mourn the death of the beloved IP desktop phone. In RADVISION we feel the downfall of the economy and measures have (read more...)

The Best Phone in the World Beaten by the Worst?

Most would agree that the iPhone is probably the best phone in the world, maybe not for the business user, but it definitely made the most hype and has the largest fan base. On the other hand, Windows Mobile is considered one of the worst operating systems for a mobile handset – up to the point that it is sometimes not even considered as a competitor in the smartphone market. So how come last year in the last quarter, Windows Mobile handsets sold more than the iPhone? Probably due to the success of HTC, and the number of different vendors that develop and sell Windows Mobile based handsets. 2009 is going to be very interesting. We will see a fight between platforms and “closed” phones: on one side of the ring we have iPhone, Palm Pre and Blackberry, on the other side Android and Windows Mobile. Will an independent OS win due to the sheer amount of vendors or will the closed phones win due to slicker end products? * I have decided to ignore Nokia and Symbian here – I don’t have an opinion about them just yet.
