Developing HD Visual Communication Products – the Webinar

In the past couple of months we’ve hosted several webinars with TMCnet. This last one before the summer break was about the hidden challenges of developing HD visual communication products – a topic that is dear to me. As it so happens, I presented this webinar alongside Sagee Ben-Zedeff, the writer of my sister blog here, Video Over Enterprise. The premise of this webinar was that once people start developing an HD video communication terminal, they will focus on their (read more...)

VoIP Clients Should Have Multi-Platform Support

We’ve just officially announced our BEE client framework solutions, a broad family of multi-protocol, multi-platform VoIP products. While we have advocated in the past for multi-protocol clients, I think we’ve taken it a step further. Not only do we offer multi-protocol support, we now offer it over multiple platforms in quite a unique manner. Last week, I had 2 meetings back-to-back, in the middle of the night (at least here in Israel, as both were with the west coast) about (read more...)

New: Visual Communications Engine from TI and RADVISION

Texas Instruments (TI), a leading manufacturer of DSP products, just announced a new joint offering, with RADVISION, based on their leading DaVinci Video Processor (DM6467) called VCE6467. If I need to sum it up in a single sentence: VCE6467 is a new product that provides an off-the-shelf video communication engine to allow easy integration and time to market for any embedded device. Leaving out the marketing-speak; I think it is the first time that a leading chipset vendor has come (read more...)

HD Videophone – Where Is the Application?

[This post is part of our Designing Hardware for HD series. Be sure to check it out!] I’d like to take a bit of a break from all those hardware posts in my “HW for HD” series, now that I’ve covered the video coding chip, as well as scaling and layout issues. Instead I want to delve into the realm of designing the software architecture of the application itself. The hardware you design will affect your software architecture. As you (read more...)

HD Video Chip Case Study: TI DM6467 Analysis

This post is part of our Designing Hardware for HD series. Be sure to check it out! [While I've done my best to cover the various options for HD video chips and the trends in the market, I also wanted to take a deeper dive and explain how we analyze such a chip. In this case, the TI DM6467, which we have selected as the basis for our BEEHD product. For that, I asked Amit Klir, our resident video architecture (read more...)

Is This the End of the Road for Resolution Wars in Visual Communications?

I think we’re coming to an end to the “resolution wars” in visual communications. While Sagee might state that in our business there is “no such thing as enough…”, when it comes to resolution and frame rate, I’d say that we’re done for now- time to move on and focus on other issues. A brief review of the recent history of video telephony Once upon a time, we (as an industry) had video conferencing. It was based on the (in)famous (read more...)

Why Hardware Trumps Software for Visual Communications

I’ve already coined the term “unattended software spoils faster than yogurt in the desert sun.” It deals with my preference of hardware over software. I guess that having this come from a software guy is a bit weird, but it is still true. In regards to the visual communications industry, it applies even more. We’ve just released our BEEHD product, which allows others to build and manufacture hardware based videophones. We’ve also just announced our partnership with Samsung, together creating (read more...)

What Makes our BEEHD Video Codec Different?

[We've just announced our Samsung-RADVISION VC240 HD videoconferencing LCD monitor and our BEEHD videophone engine. What we've noticed is that customers tend to ask a lot about our video codec in these products. Amit Klir, our "resident media specialist" for BEEHD explains what makes the video codec in our client product so great] As when giving a gift, customizing it makes the gift so much more effective: the same hold true with video codecs. When looking for one, you need (read more...)

Why NOW is THE Time for Visual Communications?

Working in the visual communication industry for a bit over a decade, the usual question keeps popping: why do I feel that NOW is THE time for visual communications? In other words, why is today different than the past? A (very) early demo of our new BEEHD solution. (more details here) It all boils down to the list of barriers to video calling that I have listed here in the past: Bandwidth Processing power Latency (read more...)
