Welcome to the Carnival of the Mobilists #147, and for the first time, it is here at VoIP Survivor. If you are not yet acquainted with this Carnival, you can become so at their website. This was quite a varied week, so there’s no single theme here for what happened in the blogosphere when it comes to mobile. As it is, I’ve divided this week’s catch into three groups: Posts relevant for those developing for mobile. Advertising related,

Next week, I’ll have the privilege of hosting the carnival here at VoIP Survivor. See you all in a week.

I just wanted to point you to two great posts on the other two blogs here: Types of Product Managers Ran over at Code of Contact just wrote about the 4 types of product managers. It’s a great read for product managers and engineers. As a Product Manager myself, I hope I am tagged as the super star by them. Video Quality Hurdles Dealing with video conferencing is not easy. It’s a lot harder than doing streaming or pure voice over IP. One of the reasons for that is that it’s hard to maintain high video quality. Sagee Ben-Zedeff at Video over Enterprise has a great overview of the pesky problems video coders need to deal with.

This time, I’ll try focusing on IPTV as it is IPTV month here on the blog. paidContent.org gives some insights to a new chip from Philips that is supposed to handle video decoding and different content streams. I still think there are missing applications, but it’s a nice start. VOD can kill multichannel TV - not with its current pay per view model. IPTV can kill multichannel TV though. 20% of all viewing will be online - does this even matter? As we blur the lines between TV and the Internet, what does it mean? Not exactly IPTV (or VoIP) AND comes from a large site - TechCrunch. We’re now connected to everyone else out there in 3 steps. Not on LinkedIn - I still find people out of my network of connections there - more people should start using it. Mom - care to join? And on a totally different note, Bob Cringley is now promising more than a post a week. This is both good and bad: Good, because he’s always a great read. Bad, because it takes TIME to read his columns. Oh - and the actual content of the post in the link is quite IPTV-related.

This is the first BlogDay I actively participate in as a blogger, though I have been exposed to the previous one. I found it interesting and useful to see what fellow bloggers tend to recommend. So here’s my list of 5 blogs for BlogDay: 1. No Jitter No Jitter is a blog related to the VoiceCon event. Now that VON is gone, they’re the water cooler of our industry. If there’s a good place for insights and good analysis regarding

Michael Mace at Mobile Opportunity complains about market share statistics - he is so right, and it’s not only the smartphone market, it is virtually any market and any product. You can read about this also in this week’s Carnival of the Mobilists. The removal of VoIP from Nokia’s handsets is pushing customers to iPhone and Android - not sure I agree on this one. Luca Filigheddu is on the spot here, as the N-series from Nokia is for the consumer market, most consumers don’t care if they call using VoIP, 3G, GSM or whatever. Speaking of Nokia, Joel Spolsky chose Nokia E71 over the iPhone 3G - the iPhone is not a one size fits all solution. Not VoIP related, but surely IP related - Cringely takes a jab at numbers, building predictions on the future from Cisco Certified Internetwork Experts statistics. Nice to see my country (Israel) doing well in his results. Another great one by the Cranky Product Manager - if you had to deal with engineers in the past (or if you are one), this one is definitely something you should read.
