HD Calling Made Easy

Yesterday, a project that I have been involved in for a long time now has been publicly announced for the first time. This might not surprise you, if you have been following this blog for a while, but here’s my latest pride and joy: a high definition videophone SDK optimized for the TI DaVinci HD system-on-chip.

This announcement fills me with pleasure – I’ve been part of this effort for a very long time, from its very consumption through the different stages, along-side a large group of very experienced engineers who were (and still are) working on it. So I apologize in advance if this is way too “marketish”, and I promise to answer any other questions you might have in future posts – just comment here or contact me privately.

Anyway, here’s some questions and answers I gathered regarding this important announcement:

What exactly is this announcement about?

It’s a new product called BEEHD.

This product is a videophone conferencing engine, which developers can use to build their own video conferencing products.

As an “engine”, it can run on any environment, but it has been highly optimized for the TI DM6467 system-on-chip (known as the “DaVinci HD”).

What can customers develop using it?

Any kind of a product that requires high definition video communication can be built using our BEEHD.

Essentially what a customer gets is a set of high level APIs on a large chunk of code base, which enables you to dial out HD calls to any other video conferencing system on the market.

You can develop a traditional room system with it, a telepresence system, a media phone or any other gizmo that may benefit from video conferencing capabilities.

What’s the big news here?

HD is happening. We’ve been pitching about it here for a long time now, and our infrastructure products do a good job supporting it (as well as the other vendors out there, some more than others).

HD video conferencing is not trivial. It requires a considerable investment (a couple of millions of dollars just to get the video coding part up and running…), and can not be done by anyone. This is why the technology is only available today to a small set of companies.

What we have set to do in this new product is to make it available to anyone. HD for all.

Want to develop an HD videophone? No problem. Just contact us, license our BEEHD product, add your own magic and you’re done.
