RIM came out with an announcement that Blackberries can replace desk phones for enterprise users. A (blackberry) bold statement, and one I do not share.
Eric Krapf, over at NoJitter, thinks this is the closest thing to a desktop phone killer ever. While that is true, with no other alternative out there, I think it’s a bit premature to mourn the death of the beloved IP desktop phone.
In RADVISION we feel the downfall of the economy and measures have been taken to reduce expenses. One of these measures was trying to reduce the communications bill. I was quite surprised to see a change for the good here – there’s a new mobile gateway in our IP PBX, which allows routing calls far better than previously done. For instance, when I intentionally cancel an incoming call on my mobile, it now passes on to my desktop phone at no additional routing cost.
If there’s a feature I’ve been missing in my mobile phone is having the ability to route the call I receive there to my desktop phone automatically when I’m at my desk. Now that’s FMC, I tell you. It’s just far easier for me to handle the big clunky desktop phone than it is a mobile one: the speaker is better, I can use a headset, I can invite additional participants to a conference – all these features are too good to miss.
So for this enterprise user, keep my desk phone on my desk. But yes – connect it to my mobile in any way you can.
