We have just announced that Quanta is using our IMS Video Share Application. What is so interesting about this press release?

  1. Video Sharing
  2. Quanta
  3. Windows Mobile

Video Sharing

[You can learn more about Video Sharing here. Basically - it’s a point-to-point service for mobile handsets.]

RADVISION's IMS Video Sharing ApplicationThe adoption of Video Sharing by operators is expanding.

Video Sharing is an interesting service for 3G mobile handsets - my own feeling is that this service will be the first IMS service to be deployed on cellular networks:

  • It combines circuit switching with packet switching
  • It requires minimal IMS infrastructure
  • It does video

More than half a year ago, AT&T was the first to launch Video Share service commercially. This year, they are investing $220 million in its Florida wireless network alone!

In Korea, SKT just launched their own Video Sharing service - they call it “T Live Video Sharing Service”, and it is part of their T Live branding of video technologies (they started with video telephony using 3G-324M and now added Video Share). The first phone available in Korea is the Samsung SCH-W350 and others are set to be released.

Other operators around the world are either toying with the idea of adding Video Sharing service in their RFIs to handset vendors.

As mobile operators continue with their search after the next service that would increase their revenue, they probably view Video Share as a good choice.

Quanta

For me, Quanta are an important handset vendor.

Quanta, one of the largest Taiwanese ODMs in the world (an ODM develops products that other vendors specified - the ODM does not own the brand of the end product and is usually left behind the scenes). Quanta are the company behind the O2 Xda comet handset, also known as O2 Xda Atom Life.

We have worked with Quanta in the past and have provided them our 3G-324M stack for their 3G video telephony needs. I am very happy to see them using more of our technology in their mobile handsets, and this time it’s our IMS Video Share Application.

Windows Mobile

RADVISION's IMS Video Sharing for Windows MobileWe are now providing a complete client that implements IMS Video Share tailored for Windows Mobile.

The mobile world is divided between several operating systems - I’ve already stated how I feel about this and what it means to downloadable clients.

Windows Mobile is used by many handset vendors. It comes pre-loaded with the classic mobile telephony services, but it does lack some of the 3G and IP technologies necessary for today’s communications. Video Sharing is not part of the OS when it comes to Windows Mobile and vendors are left to implement that technology on their own.

This brings about several obstacles to the developers:

  1. The need to learn and implement the specification of Video Sharing
  2. The need to build the application on their own and then test it for interoperability
  3. The need to integrate it as part of the phone’s UI

We are capable of providing a shortcut for developers exactly in these areas. Not only do we provide a complete implementation of the Video Share specifications that are interoperable - we also provide it fully integrated into the Microsoft Phone Canvas - the UI system built into Windows Mobile.
