With John the Plumber Working On the Pipes, Video Conferencing Will Flow

In a recent post here Ariel cautioned that the world is going High Def and bandwidth is becoming a valuable asset. He was talking about the world of visual communication, but this is true (and maybe more relevant) for the consumer and entertainment markets as well. It seems that all around us the need for bandwidth is growing. This leads one to wonder whether the infrastructure we currently have and the one we’re building for the future will be sufficient. 8 Applications I’d Like to Have on my Future Desktop Video Conferencing Solution

Tsahi from the blog next door wrote an interesting post on the 8 features he would like to see added to the TV set of the future. As I am not a big TV fan, but am a technophile and writing a blog mainly on Video Conferencing, I pondered about what killer features would I want in my (future) video conferencing solution (which I will henceforth call FVCS). Let me first tell you that I honestly believe that my future (read more...)

Is that HDTV in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

The seven deadly sins of visual quality over IP

[This post is based on a lecture given by Ariel David and I on the effects of IP networks on visual quality in video over IP applications] One of the biggest obstacles of the video conferencing industry has long been the user experience. Early video conferencing systems suffered from poor quality video and low fidelity audio, as well as great difficulties in establishing and maintaining connection for the conference duration. Most of these issues were solved with advances in processor (read more...)

I feel the need, the need for speed

A few weeks ago Bezeq, Israel’s leading telecommunications provider, announced that its Board of Directors decided to move forward with the Next Generation Network (NGN) project. Bezeq is the dominant leader in the fixed line (wire-line) market in Israel and a strong player in the internet provider market (based on ADSL technology). Bezeq will invest, according to the press release, more than $400 million in upgrading its infrastructure in order to provide internet services at bitrates of up to 50Mbps. (read more...)
