High Definition Desktop Video – Just Try It!

November 6th, 2008

I have been talking and writing a lot about Video Conferencing since I started working for RADVISION. I have to admit, in the past I wasn’t sure what form would the personal video conferencing endpoint have, but lately the answer is literally right in front of you: Desktop Video Conferencing.

If you haven’t heard, Desktop Video Conferencing is happening, and although there is always room for more innovation, the recent release of Scopia Desktop, RADVISION’s desktop video client, is promising a totally new experience whether you are a video conferencing veteran or a first-time user.

The New Scopia Desktop

The new Scopia Desktop (V5.7) is offering:

  • 720p HD video using a standard USB web cam
  • Connection to any participant, using a room system or desktop client
  • Data collaboration (sharing your desktop and/or documents)
  • Optimized bandwidth utilization
  • Participation in conferences from anywhere, including behind firewalls

I am telling you all that now because Scopia Desktop is now offering a free trial. Yes, you read it correctly – you can now Try Scopia Desktop using your own PC and camera. No need to buy anything, no need to go anywhere. Just follow the link, install the software (small download, quick install) and connect. You can talk to your friends, talk to your family or join one of the on-going conferences.

Just Try It!

Try Scopia NOW

Everyone is talking about extending visual communication to the desktop. We are extending this to you. But don’t get carried away by hype or media coverage – give it a test drive and you’ll discover what you are missing out on. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, we’ve got the video. Just TRY it!

Looks cool. When does the Mac version come out? What video codecs does it support? And what standard protocol does it use for call signaling?

@Ruvik: Give it a try. I use it on a regular basis between our TLV office and the US.
@Todd: I will try and get into these details ASAP either in a comment here or in a dedicated post.

Will this work normal broadband connection on public IP? Kindly send the connectivity options for the Scopia-desktop. Kindly send the standard camera specifications for HD Video conferecing over desktop.

    Hi Sharad,

Yes SCOPIA Desktop works on normal broadband connection, ADSL or Cable Modem. With its automatic firewall and proxy traversal, connection will succeed whether you are on a public IP or behind a NAT or firewall.

While in a SCOPIA Desktop call, you can then invite room systems (H.323
or SIP). For more information I invite you to check our SCOPIA Desktop product page (http://www.radvision.com/Products/Video-Products/Desktop-Video-Communications/SCOPIA-Desktop-Video-Conferencing/default.htm)

Finally, the camera we recommend in order to send High Definition video (up to 720p @ 30fps) is the Logitech QuickCam 9000.

Thank you and hope to see you on TryScopia!

Would be interested to know the normal bandwith required for Scopia Desktop, and the minimum one ta have an acceptable quality.
    is that bandwith manageable?
    Thank you
    Bruno

    Bonjour Bruno,

SCOPIA Desktop requires at least 128K of bandwidth to have an acceptable video experience. But if you want high definition (720p) video, we recommend at least 768K. I am for example using SCOPIA Desktop from home over my ADSL connection, and I am getting a perfect high definition experience.

The Bandwidth is of course manageable. SCOPIA Desktop client will automatically monitor the loss and delay and adjust the bandwidth accordingly. The administrator can also limit and monitor the bandwidth using our management software named iVIEW.

I hope this answer your question.

Thank you for your interest in SCOPIA Desktop.
