Five Books You MUST Read If You Want to REALLY Know Your Way Around Video

This blog is usually all about innovation, revolution and the future, but there’s one thing that stuck with me and hasn’t changed since the days I was a kid: Books. One may wonder if in this time and age books are still relevant, and I must admit that I am a sucker for them. It may seem like a wonder how this “old” medium survived, but a “soft” version of a book would never compare to the “hard” version of (read more...)

Nurse, hand me the endpoint, please…

In a recent episode of House, the successful FOX TV show, Dr. House and his medical staff used video conferencing to aid a fellow doctor located at the South Pole to diagnose her symptoms after she falls gravely ill. Dr. House uses his laptop from home and an endpoint in the hospital to help Dr. Milton diagnose and treat herself, and eventually save her own life. Spoiler from FOX for the House episode “Frozen”. Video conferencing to the aid (read more...)

Ask The EXPERT: Scalable Video Coding and the Future Of Video Conferencing

Bryan O’Rourke recently commented on one of my posts and asked the following: “What are your thoughts on this tool and how it might assist moving video conferencing forward?” I promised Bryan I will dedicate a post to his question, and here I am keeping that promise in another edition of “Ask The EXPERT” - - - In Short Vidyo’s technology is interesting. It definitely shows the potential that still lies in H.264 tools, including Scalable Video Coding (SVC), for (read more...)

10K of Technology for the Human Race

The Human Race 10K banner. (CC) On the last (Sun)day of August I participated in a one of the most amazing world-wide sporting events/marketing campaigns I have ever experienced - the Nike Human Race 10K. In case you hadn’t heard: on August 31 almost 1 million runners, in 27 locations around the world, from China to Australia, including myself and 10,000 others in Tel Aviv,  ran 10 kilometers. This was a truly thrilling experience, and not just because I (read more...)

Gartner has released its latest Hype Cycle Research Report: Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies 2008. Of the 27 technologies they list as “emerging” over the next few years, Green IT, Video TelePresence and Cloud Computing are at the “Peak of Inflated Expectations” and should be adopted, according to Gartner, in 2-5 years. 100% in-person meeting experience is heading your way

George Colony, the CEO of Forrester Research (and NOT the actor…), recently wrote a post on his blog about the Pros and Cons of using Telepresence for long-distance business meetings instead of traveling. Colony’s team, located in Massachusetts, met with John Chamber’s team, located in California, all using Cisco Telepresence rooms. Colony says “the experience is a close emulation of an in-person meeting. If in-person is 100% and traditional video conferencing is 40%, the attendees put TelePresence at 80%”. (read more...)

Is that HDTV in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

Are the Olympic Games a Win for Mobile Video Content? The Olympic Games in Beijing have really put TV back in the spotlight, in case people were starting to wonder if this medium is on its way down. The combination of live competition and mass marketing sent people running to any screen available - from the HDTV in the living room to the mobile phone in their pocket. The Olympic Games were a good benchmark, if you want to examine (read more...)

Making the Impossible (Box)

Tsahi continues with his disruptive posts, and his latest addresses IPTV. Tsahi argues that IPTV is no revolution at this point in time. It is much of the same. Mainly because there are no new features, and VOD and PVR functionality are quite limited. “These features are simply not enough for consumers to take the leap to IPTV”, he writes, and claims that “as we stream an all-IP network to our homes, and use it not only for the internet (read more...)
